Fire crews from multiple agencies were dispatched to the Salt Point Turnpike building in Poughkeepsie at approximately 7 a.m. on Thursday, March 7, when a fire sparked, sending smoke billowing that could be seen for nearly a mile, officials said.

It took firefighters several hours to knock down the flames, which at times could be seen breaking through side walls. The front of the building was completely destroyed, and the interior suffered extensive smoke, fire and water damage.

The Roosevelt Fire Department was the lead agency battling the blaze, and were joined by crews from nine other area departments who assisted at the scene and were on standby in case of emergency.

The fire led to multiple road closures, including Salt Point Turnpike and stretches of Route 115, according to the New York State Highway Department.

According to reports, the bulk of the building was occupied by the excavation company, though there were other renters who utilized space in the building. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, led by the Dutchess County Fire Investigation team, which remains at the scene.
